Ever had to seek out the location of your favourite apps, or wondered why all your space is used up with someone else’s choices? Let’s reclaim control of our home screen together and make our devices our own. Home screen settings. Simply, press on an empty space to open the personalise menu, most Android devices are similar to home settings, widgets, wallpaper and maybe themes. Depending on your Android, can get options like installing new apps adds an icon to your home screen, if your home screen rotates, how notifications work and even the shape/style of icons. You can use photos, live wallpapers or get a new one every day. Remember the wallpaper scrolls as you shuffle across the app screens and if you allowed rotation the picture may end up squished or zoomed when horizontal. Apps and Widgets. We love Android’s customisation and the millions of amazing apps. So, it can be frustrating that manufacturers apps are installed or taking up our room. Android 9 allows you to remove or uninstall most apps by long pressing on them and tap or dragging to the top. Anything on your home screen will also be duplicated in your app menu so if removed by accident you can always re-add. Some apps also have a quick function when you long press too, like Google Maps will direct you straight home, or WhatsApp takes you to your top 4 message conversations. The key to this is to press straight on the app and then let go, don’t drag it about. Core system apps won’t allow you to uninstall them even if you are never going to use them. You can minimise their impact by long pressings and hitting the little (i) to get into the app details where can disable or uninstall updates to save space and turn off notifications or auto updates. Widgets are there if you want info before needing to click to open. Great if you want to see the latest weather, what meetings you have on to or need to quickly change the track as your mate added the greatest showman soundtrack to your playlist. Finally, there is the number of screens your apps and widgets take up. You can be minimalist or be a hoarder… all down to personal choice. To add a page, drag an app to the edge of an existing one and it creates a new one. To remove a page tidy everything off it and it should vanish. You can always tell how many pages your home screen has by this little indicator.
