If someone got hold of your phone, what personal information would they find and could they use it against you? One of the easiest ways to protect your information from prying eyes is using a screen lock on your device. Every time you want to use your phone, you’ll be able to unlock the screen in a way that’s unique to you. It’s easy to set up and it can stop criminals from getting access to your pictures, payment cards, and other personal information. Depending on what device you’ve got, there’s a few options available to you. Check your device’s security settings to see what kind of screen lock you can use. PIN codes are usually 4 digits but on some devices you can make them longer and more complicated. Passwords are a more secure screen lock as they allow a combination of letters and numbers, which reduces the chances of it being guessed if your phone falls into the wrong hands. On some devices, it’s also possible to use a pattern lock. This means you can unlock your phone with one hand, making it quicker and easier to access it when you really need to. If your phone allows you to use a pattern lock, draw out a pattern and confirm it. Then, when you next unlock your phone, you just need to draw the pattern again. One of the safest and most convenient ways to keep your phone protected is using your fingerprint as a way of unlocking it. If this option is available, just use your thumb or finger to calibrate the fingerprint recognition. There might be times when your device doesn’t quite recognise your fingerprint. Create a back up PIN code so you can still unlock your device when that happens.
